Media Diet
October 2, 2007 by peterhill
Some people think that we are “overloaded” with media. Below is an article that compares our media exposure to a diet. But, instead of talking about calories, carbs, and fat, it talks about news, movies, and video games. Read the article below, and then post a comment. What do you agree with and why? What do you disagree with? Is there anything in this article that connects to your everyday life? Your response should be at least 3 sentences. Hopefully, it will be more.
Remember to sign your comment with your first name and last initial.
It’s easy enough to imagine how the principles of good nutrition could inform a media diet — principles like moderation, balance, and variety. We could also use as a starting point those questions that we already ask about food: while you’re worrying how many chips it takes to expand your waistline, why not wonder how many ads it takes to lower your attention span? Are sitcom’s “empty calories” to be avoided? Can you get everything you need from one news source? Is the BBC the media equivalent of spinach, and Fox News a mass media McDonald’s for your eyes?
Of course you can also treat your media diet like more of a cleanse — a detox regime for your mental environment. Think of it as an investigation. We hear so many suggestions, for example, that media images of beauty feed insecurity and self-hate, that a media diet laced with violence can contribute to aggression, desensitization, and anxiety. So try ditching action movies and Grand Theft Auto for a few months, just to see what happens. It could do nothing. Or maybe the war in Iraq will gain a new, peculiar gravity for you.
Ultimately any media diet would have to be based, again, on a mix of good science and personal experience. Unlike with food, however, our media diet would be tainted from the outset by the considerable flow of media we have no choice but to consume. The point, then, like in any good diet, is not extremism. Rather, the idea is to pick up a good habit or two. You’ll develop a more astute, nuanced and personal understanding of the profound effect media has on your mind. And the real payoff: feeling a little more in control, a little clearer, a little saner, and even a little bit more secure.
What do you like for breakfast?
BBC=french toast
NBC=orange juice
CBS=eggs (over light)
ABC=bacon
PBS=corned beef hash
Fox=burnt toast

My media diet consists of New York Times some mornings, Mainetoday.com, BBC newsround on the weekends, and NPR/MPBN, WMPG while driving. I consider myself to be on a media diet for life. I do not watch t.v. because I find commercials distracting and terribly annoying.
-Mrs. Colella
I agree with this article I think everyone should have a Media diet, its good for us to know whats going on in the world especially whats on the news. I do not watch t.v very much like Mrs. colella because I find commercials annoying. Although I agree with the media diet I do not agree with the fact the just the news can be educational because we have Discovery Channel and shows like that, that actually teach us something and dont try to brainwash us with ads trying to convince us to buy things we really dont need everyday. Although I think the media diet would be good for us I think I will try out this media diet thing even though I do not use that much media.
I agree with alot of this, such as moderation and things like that. But alot of media you can ignore or not pay attention to. You may see an add for McDonald’s but that doesn’t mean that you will want to go out and buy a burger. And even if it does that also doesn’t mean that you can’t take two seconds and say, wait do I really want to do that or do I really need that. Overall it was quite well written and I think very accurate.
I kind of agree with this article because it’s kind of true that, like, sitcoms are like unhealthy foods or empty calories. And also you should think about media as a diet because too much TV can really affect people. Also, how much TV does affect your attention span?
My media diet contains dirty jobs and other discovery channel shows. My media diet occurs when i am bored or sleepy. love t.v. but i would like it more if there where less commercials cause every time I am watching a show when it gets good there is always a commercials.

If I had to choose between a People magazine, or a National Geographic magazine, I would most likely choose the People. (Unless there was something in the National Geographic that I’m interested it.) In the morning though, I watch the Today Show (if I have time) I think that show is a good balance between news, and things that I can be interested in. (celebrity gossip, movie reviews, fashion tips…
Also, since my homepage is MSN, I do read some of the articles on there, and some of the articles on the Yahoo news.
But one thing that I definitley don’t like about media, is that there is pretty much just one image that they expect everyone to follow. The media pressures lots of people to be skinny, especially girls our age. I think people really just need to take a lot of what the media says a lot less seriously. (well, not the actual news…it is important to know what is going on around you)

I think that games only desenditize you if you start looking at the world like a video game. If you start thinking that everything is fake then you can not feel sadness when people die because to you if you dont no them then they arent human to you. So you just have seperate reality from virtual reality.

I think that we do use media a *bit* much… but on the other hand it is usually a good thing. Sometimes it is necessary to use media. Sure we use laptops in school, but it is a good thing, and it is necessary sometimes.
Connor James
I agree with this article because it’s true that uneducational shows like sitcoms are like unhealthy foods or emptyu calories. But the news is not the only educational show. There are a lot of shows on, like, PBS or Discovery Chanel that you can learn a lot from. Also, how much TV does affect your attention span?
-Grace
I agree that it’s important to balance the stations you get your news from. Even though Fox News and other channels claim to be fair and balanced, their information has been edited and tilted to show the opinions of the reporters themselves. I also agree with Devon that the idea of beauty is over-hyped. Images in the media of too-skinny women have often been edited to digitally to take the fat off. That means that the magazines are telling young girls to live up to unrealistic expectations which can cause eating disorders.

Hudsons Media Diet.
Radio - Q 97.9, 95.9, 94.3
TV - Beauty and the Geek, Reaper, ANTM, Gossip Girl. Somtimes I watch other shows if I get bored. I don’t have cabel or anything like that so the only chanels I have are like the CW, ABC, FOX, and others. I basically only watch the CW.
I sometimes watch the news if I see somthing interesting.
I don’t read the newspaper because my family never gets it.
I get a lot of my information from people. I talk to a lot of different people. I have very different friends and they give me the new they know.
I’m not really intersted in whats going on in america. I’m 13 and I don’t want political thing going on in my mind when being a young is about enjoying life until you’re an adult.
I know tv is bad for your eyes and brain and so it the computer so basically right now everyone who is writing one of these is hurting their brain. But I never worry about things like that.
-Hudson J.
I agree with some of the article because I do think that some media is good for you. For example the newspaper is a media and that can some times be good for you. Also certain t.v shows can be good for you like the discovery channel and the national geographic channle. But i do agree that some channles on t.v. are bad for you and you do get affected by it if you wacth too much of it.
Natalie A
I agree with this article becuase when you are sitiing on your couch watching T.V. or playing video games is kind of boring and not good for your media diet.
Abdi Ali
Well i dont disagree and agree with anything. My Media diet is to come to school ever day and learn. Then do my homework so i get good grades in school. A low t.v. watching to much homework. It dose not affect me doing stuff in school
by Sabrina l
I think that the media is kind of like a diet and I think that it is kinda cool to compare what type of food you like to what type of television you like. For example I would want corned beef hash for breakfast but I would rather watch My Name is Earl, The Simsons, The Office, and Scrubs rather than pbs. So I think that it is kinda fun to compare food to media.
Hugh C.
my media diet consists of NESN HD in the mornings to see if my favorite sports teams won. I do watch T.V. for atleast a little bit each day. On my spare time, I watch NFL and college football and I always play hockey or soccer for atleast an hour each day. I never really thought that what I watch on T.V. can make me smarter. I usually just watch what entertains me. I also play video games a few times a week. But sometimes I don’t watch any T.V. at all because Im too busy playing sports and having fun with my friends. I go on my boat usually one time each weekend. So I get a lot of exsercize. Its hard to do homework since Im doing so many sports.
By: Sean B.
I agree that we sometimes need to watch less t.v. and do something that is useful for us. People do watch some of the same thing to much and play the same video games way to much, it gets boring to me. I rarely play my video games now because all my games get boring, the reason is that I play to much of that game at one time.
-Bounahra Kim
I agree with some of the things like that if you watch to many sitcoms it will probably dumb you down but saying that if you stop playing GTA for a week will make you more sensitive to violence I think is too far because I play it all the time and I care about the people in Iraq. I also have never read the newspaper in my life so that doesn’t affect me and commercials make me mad but they make the good moments of TV that much better.
Ben D.
I agree for the most part with the article, but I’m not too supportive of the idea that media containing violence will suddenly turn us into violent, crazy people. (Although for some, yeah true.) ..But I’m not too sure about Grand Theft Auto suddenly turning you into some crazy, car stealing maniac. But hey, that’s just me. Like Alyssa said though, news isn’t the only educational thing on TV though. All I ever see on news is what the majority of people consider important - mainly international/national events- but that’s not all there is to learn about in the world. And for all we know, news channels, even if they seem educational, could very easily be stuffing your face with lies.
..Aha. Sorry if that seems off topic~ (:
Anyways. Media Diet = okay. For the most part.
-Nicole E.
I agree because some people need to go on a diet and people change thier habit and stay fit, eat right and no junk food.
Peter N.
i don’t no what the article is saying about the stuff on the t.v or the stuff in real life.
by isaac atterberry
My media is pretty normal. I don’t have cable, cause it’s bad for your brain, and It manipulates anybody on whats going on with the everyday life of others and what to buy cause it’s the style today. On my spare time, I watch CNN with my dad, I read, and play sports. Some of the media in todays life is some what good, and somewhat bad. A agree with trying not to watch t.v for a couple of months, to see what happens to the audience and the media, to see how it changes their behavior. When you watch comercials, whats the first thing that pops in your head? What pops in my head is that half of the people are skinny, sure there’s some healthy looking people. Everyone knows that it’s horrible, but the kids are going to start to think they should look like the poeple they see on T.V.
K.T
I agree that we are way overloaded in media that is filled with lies. Like all the teen magazines telling us how we are “supposed” to look and all those false adds for things that are supposed to work miracles but don’t. Some media is good because you need to stay informed on what’s happening around the world.
Madeleine
I think a diet is a great comparison to media exposure because they are alike in so many ways. I also agree with what the article is saying, you can always have too much of something and you need to be aware of it. A media diet sounds like a great thing to strive for but not a neccesity. I try not too pay attention to the media too much, mostly because I’m a lazy teenager but it’s sad how much propaganda is around us and for the most part we don’t even realize it.
Dylan B
I agree with most of what the article is saying. Everyone shouldn’t get to much of just one thing. I don’t really watch news on the TV because I get bored easily.
I usually get my news from newspapers like Portland Press Harold.
Liam McNeill
i guess this article accurate about not watching to much TV or news, because it can be unhealthy, or not to play very much video games with excessive violence, because that can literally change you. so yeah this article is right in my opinion and if everyone takes this into moderation and think for themselves when watching tv, a lot more people would be a lot more respectful and positive and not as angry, maybe.
-coleman b
I think that games only desenditize you if you start looking at the world like a video game. I kinda agree with this article, because just like Abdifitah A said, your brain gets smarter and smarter as you learn something. But I kinda desagree with Abdi, too. Because that when you learn bad words like swearing, that doesn’t make your brain to smarter.

I also think that we are getting a lot of bad information from the media, but Devon i just have to say that i read Seventeen Mgazine and they never tell anyone how to loose 165 pounds, they never tell people to loose weight but they tell you that it is healthy to exersize to keep your body healthy. But I do agree with what you said about if someone did loose 165 pounds in a month that is really unhealthy.
—Zoe
I think that we should be exposed to all different kinds media to get a good perspective of things. I think that a lot of the media these days is inaccurate or misleading. We should not take all media seriously or not seriously enouph, we should put things into perspective.
Max E
I defenitly think that people spend way too much time watching tv and imimg people and everything elce. we have 100 years to live if we’re really lucky, and only 50 when we’re awake. (seeing as you spend half your life sleeping). so dont spend so much of that watching tv. you’re rotting away in front of the tv. im not saying we shouldnt watch tv, we should just moderate it. spend less time in front of the computer, and more time doing something productive.
-Cece
I also agree with the media diet idea but I would make maybe a change or two. I think that to watch the news in the morning everyday, read the Martha Stuart magazine once a month or so, and watch discovery channel sometimes in the evening would make a good diet but it would get kind of boring. I would probably add in some sci fi, and cartoons, and some actiony video games every once and a while. Then it would make my media diet healthy but interesting at the same time. It’s the same with food. If everyone ate milk and brussle sprouts all the time, sure it would be a healthy diet but they would lose interest in what they were eating and their taste buds would probably die and that’s why people eat the ocasional french fries and soda.

I do no like people watch t.v to much .If have fun activteis go outside play soccer.
BY Ricardo.A
I don’t really agree with the article because getting all that media stuff just like gives you different opinions and things and different views. Then stuff gets heated and fights start about whatever the media was saying. I just don’t like it, media corrupts you. John T.
I agree with this article because you can be bombarded by watching to many news channels . A lot of news channels show only negative information and advertisments for companies. But if you do not watch or listen to news , you may not know what is happening in the world .
Alexis W.
I do agree with the media diet, I think its a good, right track to be on. We get so much media on t.v’s, computers, newspapers- it’s like our whole lives are all about media! I do watch t.v, sometimes but I do think the commericials are just plain ANNOYING!!!
-Howa M.(:
…….):
I agree with what the article said. I didn’t really disagree with any thing the article stated but even if sitcom’s are like empty calories I dont think I am going completly stop watching them. I think the entire aticle relates to every day life because you always see things on tv or in the paper, you always see them in diets to so both of things relate to life. Even in school you see alot advertising like namebrand clothing and computers and the products the teachers buy, but thats my opinoin. But I think almost all of them are stupid, but I like some of them like the above the influence comercials.

This article is true video games are bad for you t.v. kills your eyes .Same with everthing else news pappers, radio , magazines these all help or don’t help but we still can use it as a resuorce for something we want to know about.

Even though Sierra`s comment was short.. I have to agree with her! Its true dont rely on what other people have to say about things! I also agree with what the article says! Try a new media diet! Stop watching cartoons and stuff. Try the news or educational shows if you want to watch television. Or just stop watching television overall. Dont let all these adds preasure you to buy there stuff. Dont believe everything they have to say either. Try a new life style on this media stuff. Do you really need stupid products that dont even work? Dont think so!!!

i agreed with this one because i thing media diet is important so i think everyone should make there own media diet. i don’t watch tv so i don’t know what’s going on the world. if sometime i do watch a commercials because i think it’s borin and distracting.

I agree that u should have a media diet. Like yo shouldnt have french fries every day and vegtables once a month. Or watch tv for 8 hours every day.
Like u can change your media diet and watch something diffrent.

I kind of went off topic on my comment so i’m writing what we were supposed to do.
I agree that a lot of things in the media are unhealthy like how a lot of celebs have drug problems and drinking problems.
Another thing is that american news dosn’t talk about things in other countries. I don’t just want to know about america. I would like to hear about France, Japan, China, sweden or anywhere.
I think that Video Games are bad for people. They are very fun I admit. But they’re pretty bad for you.
-Hudson J. (again)
I like this article a lot and I really agree with it. I like the statement, “while you’re worrying how many chips it takes to expend your waistline, why not wonder how many ads it takes to lower your attention spend?” That statement got my attention. I never thought about that before. I wonder if watching too many commercials and looking at too many ads will really lower your attention spend. It’s really hard not to see ads. Every month I get Teen Vogue sent to me. I love magazines and I freak out when I see an interesting one but almost like every other page is an ad. Not ALL ads are bad. Some are about convincing people to do good things like not doing drugs.
Kate H
I watch enough tv to influence me very little.I like to hang and listen to the raidio because i realy find that the radio tells you more than tv i mean some times the tv can tell you stuff like which hair products to bye and then the radio can tell you the news but at the same time you get to listen to music.

my media dieT would look like This.
Movies: I waTch all kinds of movies.
TV: I someTimes waTch TV.
News: I almosT never waTch The news.
Radio: I only lisTen To music on The radio.
I Think iT’s good To compare media To your dieT.

I aggre that Tv,Movies and the radio is like food because if you watch to much bad tv you could get false information and if you eat to much bad food you could get fat.

I think that this article is right that there are tons of things in the media that aren’t good or worth your time, but I also believe that there are things that are stupid that are also fun to watch, even if they aren’t really good. You could probably watch them in moderation, like eating junk food. Though things in the media can be bad, even if you don’t agree with them they are sometimes good to read or watch anyway, just to know what’s going on in the world. So I guess watching, like, the Discovery Channel and the news is alright. So I pretty much agree with this blog.
-Jesse Dritz
I agree with the article and i think meadia is good for us like when we watch T.v we Learn new things and get better at doing stuff in school and projects.
Sabir A.
I agree that the media is overloading our young minds with false news. I don’t want to have to turn on the TV every day and have to see a bunch of advertisments involving energy supliments, or things that will make you go to sleep quickly. What really concerns me is the fact that news reporters around the world get the story, but decide to leave out certain parts, and add in bizarre things that many people tend to believe. If the citizens of the world that watch advertisments decide to buy into things such as a new acne cream or a “Swivel Sweeper,” they wil end up losing all their money, and won’t be able to pay off such things as taxes, bills, and eventually, their car, or home. Someone should try to solve this worldwide media attack against people, so that the media can stop taking the economy’s money.
Jacob M.
Dylan, if anyone lost 165 pounds in a month they would like die.

I totally agree with Grace that sitcoms are unhealthy foods or empyt calories. Although some tv can be ok to watch, just not so often. For instence, the discovery channel and the news. I also think that sometimes the news does get a bit excited about different stories and adds extra information that isn’t quite true.
-Morgan
I agree with the miedia diet because I think you should be aware of the world around you, and not just be succed in to another infomercial. One of my classmates once said that; “everyone is so concerned and involeved in Anna-Nicole Smith’s death when hundreds of soldiers are dying in Iraq every day when all you hear about that on the news usally is something like; ‘300 soldiers died in Iraq today including the father of six.” Anna-Nicole’s story would be three times longer than that of the more important topic.
I also dissagree with the article because just because you play video games and wath t.v. doesn’t mean that you’re not aware of the world around you, and what is happening in the world.
-Katy D
I agree with this article everyone has a media diet. My media diet is to listen to BBC while my dad is using the computer. I want to know what is going on in the world i don’t want to wake up one morning and find out Somalia had an earth quake. I want to learn more about the history of somalia an the president and the another life’s of other somalians. When i grow up i want to go back to somalia.
Abdi At
The media diet sounds like a good idea to me, but I usually get some NPR on the way to school (and every other time I’m driving with my dad). I agree that the tv and other kinds of media don’t always tell the truth. But sometimes I think an occasional campaign ad or political ad can give you a better, more true sense of what other people think. but in general, when I’m watching tv and the commercials come on I just press mute until they’re over.
Isaac J
I agree with the fact that there is a lot of bad media here today. But I disagree that media drains our attention span because media, if you see on t.v. some of the ads are scams and ways to get your money but it is not draining you attention span, I think there is other things that are. For example if you are listening to the teacher and don’t pay attention because you watch a lot of t.v. it’s not television it is just you are trying not to pay attention.
Tim P.
I think that all of people do the same habit over and over so wont they say its a time for a change.
abdifitah A
The media can take contorl over our minds, cartoons espcially. Late night cartoons influence violence and, a drug related manners. If you stay away from TV, and spend time outside, you can learn so much about the world around you. If you don’t think that you can do that, try watching the news, educational shows, or National Geographic. That doesn’t seem to hard, does it?
Jacob M. (again)
I agree that t.v. and commercials most of all can make you more insecure because when you see an ad that has Paris Hilton or someone really buff you might get really insecure about your body image. I also agree that if everybody would watch less violence or fighting on t.v, there would be less violence and fighting in the real world. I think that some shows like Entertainment Tonight, or The Insider, (even though I sometimes watch those shows) have a lot of false things about the celebrities that they are talking about. I watch the news on channel 13 in the morning, and at night I just watch whatever is on starting at 7:00.
Signed,
Lily A.
I disagree with the fact that the media is not the only way that draws the lack of focus in our population. I think that it might be other things like taking away the privileges of doing these things which are taking our focus away. There are other ways to expand your mind.

I agree with the article because I think that knowing what’s going on is important. But getting a variety of what you watch is also important. Commercials just try to convince us that we need things that we really don’t. I rarely watch T.V or commercials because I don’t have cable at my house, but I still see advertisements. They are all around us, almost everywhere we go.
-Djuna K.
The Real Thing! T-shirts have been a source of information and advertising for over 50 years. It began as a way to get your product seen by the public. Companies like Coca-Cola used their advertising dollars for printing up t-shirts. Their product was advertised on the front and the shirts were given out free by the thousands for people to wear out in public. But what began as advertising turned into an actual product. Today people actually PAY for such products as Gap sweatshirts and A&F t-shirts.
So that $18 t-shirt (made in Bangladesh by blind orphans for 37 cents) that you use your own money to pay for becomes a form of free advertisement for these companies. Next time you purchase one ask the salesperson if you can get paid for wearing and advertising their product.
MrLB
I’m impressed with the insights of Windsor 8. Your comments are very articulate, and you seem to understand a lot about the media already!
Ms. T
Also!!! Have a book or something, or a pen and a pad of paper, with u when yur watchin tv. When commercials come on doodle or read and when u hear yur show back on mark yur place and see yur show again. But dont watch too much of that soap opera stuff thats like eating green tomatoes and coleslaw in a stale bread sandwhich if u watch more than two a week.

I think that you would want to ask the owners lots of questions so that you could put the dogs into similar categories. Some of the questions you would want to ask are:
•What kind of exersize does your dog get?
•How old is your dog?
•What breed is your dog?
•Is your dog healthy? (Besides being fat.)
•What does your dog normally eat?
•How much does your dog normally eat?
-Jesse D.
Situation 2:
What was the brand of the food for the dogs?
How much does the owner feed the dogs a day?
Do the owner over feed the dogs?
If they do why do they want the dogs over weight?
Do the dogs go on a diet?
If I were researching I’d ask these questions.
Do you play any sports?
Do you scrape your shoe a lot?
Do you play in water?
What do you use them for?
Do put your shoes in the washing machine?

Some of the qestions I would ask Owners are:

How much deos your dog eat?
How much does your dog get out?
How many times a year do you bring your dog go to the vet?

Some questions i would ask the owners is if they were in like track cause depanding on the activties and if the person is in a wheel chair there shoes would look like they were brand new.
